What the "X" in .docx Stands For
Microsoft Office 2007 saves documents by default in a new format called .docx. The format is, of course, not backwards compatible with prior versions of Word for PCs (at least without downloading a converter utility), or with any versions of Word for Mac that I am aware of. Which makes me believe that the “x” really stands for “mystery”, since it’s a virtual...
Footers - My Favorite Metadata Hiding Place
I wrote a post yesterday on metadata and not revealing confidential information by mistake. Just writing it made me focus even more closely on all the bits (heh heh) of information inside Word documents that are really hard to find, never mind eliminate. My current favorite is page footers. Almost every document I create has at least two “sections”, which generally means two...

Do I Really Need a Metadata Scrubber? →
The California Bar Journal, a monthly newspaper for attorneys, had a recent update on laws regarding metadata, how to avoid disclosing it inadvertently to opposing sides in litigation, and what to do if someone sends you a document containing inadvertent disclosures.
There are a couple of items in it that might be surprising. Among these is that the California Supreme Court recently opined that...

Roll-my-own Tumblr Digest →
I use this blog mostly for business oriented posts, and Tumblr and Twitter for “lifestreaming”. What I have discovered, though, is that the line gets frequently blurred and there are things I would like to post in two or more places.
On my Tumblr page, I have added feed digests from Twitter and Last.fm. The former sends one daily update of my tweets, and the latter shows my weekly top artists.
I...

The Way a Free Trial Should Be
I signed up for Basecamp recently and got a 30 day free trial. I had to provide my credit card number so that when the trial ran out they could bill me for the paid service. My trial is almost up and I just got a reminder email saying “we will bill you soon. We’d love to have you stay with us, but if you don’t want to please cancel now”. I think a lot of services skip this...

Plug-and-play music player?
I posted my wish for a “universal calendar language” here, so that my Zimbra calendar could share with my wife’s Yahoo and someone else’s Google. I also wished for an open web-music standard for favorites so I don’t have to re-enter my favorite groups on every new app I try. Sonicliving’s favorites page would do nicely. What I’ve realized I’d like...
Risk vs. Perception →
I’ve seen this graph in a couple of places on tumblr (esp. the Wallstrip crew). It apparently started with a piece by Susanna Hertrich. In general it’s probably close to correct, even though I have no idea what “electrosmog” means. However, I seriously doubt that “asteroid impact” is 10% as likely as “traffic accident” as the graph seems to...

The First Rule of Holes →
I’m sure I am the last person to hear this term, but it’s a gem.
The First Rule of Holes is that if you find yourself in one, stop digging. It sounds so simple- I think the hard part may be understanding that you are actually in one, or maybe the urge to tunnel away from problems is just irresistible.
Either way, the term is going into my lexicon.
Slow Steps Into the Digital Age at the IRS →
For those who have never filed form 1099 before, one copy (red) goes to the IRS and another (black) goes to the independent contractor who provided services to a business. Apparently the reason for this is that the IRS’s computers scan the filings, and they can only read forms printed with red ink.
One can’t download the fileable form, because the shade of red must be very specific and a normal...

The Tour of California is available from start to finish in a live streaming format. This is great. Actually getting the feed without constant bandwidth stutters is a different matter, though. It is basically impossible to follow the commentary when it is broken up continually. I’m not sure whether the problem is on the sending end or my receiving end. Maybe I just need my own...
ITunes Receipts Take a Long Time to Show Up
When every single online retailer manages to send a payment receipt immediately after I complete a transaction, and iTunes itself downloads purchased songs instantly, why is it that the receipts for music I buy show up a week later?
Microsoft gets more hostile towards Yahoo, seeks... →
File this under “that would never happen to us”. Microsoft may try to replace Yahoo’s entire Board, which is possible because the Board is elected all at once instead of in yearly increments. Even 6 months ago it may have seemed like a remote chance to the Yahoo Board that someone could attempt a hostile takeover. Bet they wish now they’d planned long ago for the worst...
The Modem Diaries
My DSL modem went down for good early this morning. It took me 7 hours to find a store that was open, answering their phones and with a replacement in stock. Once home, it took 3 minutes (really!) to plug it in, get my Apple router to talk to it and get back on the Internet. Thank you Apple.

Dear Mr. Microsoft- What the heck is .docx?
Someone just sent me a Word document in .docx format. Apparently Word 2007 has its own brand new format? My Mac thought it was a compressed file and got stuck on it. Microsoft has kindly provided a converter utility for pre-2007 versions of Word http://tinyurl.com/2zpc5q, but only if they are on Windows. Argh. Another incompatible format. Wonderful.

Blackberry on Zimbra: I Never Knew How Good I Had...
I just switched from Treo to Blackberry on Zimbra- my provider upgraded to Zimbra 5.0 and it seems not to play well with Palm-based Treos everywhere. Zimbra doesn’t support Blackberry Enterprise Server and the workaround is a 3rd party program called NotifyLink. I’m still working with it, but it seems clear that I had true “push” using the Chatteremail client for Palm,...
