100% kitten joy is THE standard all platforms...
I’ve never even heard of Posterous before reading this post. For me, Tumblr’s solid UI + strong community = win. And the important element of that equation is the community — even if Posterous’s UI was powered with 100% kitten joy, it wouldn’t be able to replace the relationships I’ve made and maintain on Tumblr. via mashable.com Funny comment thread from...

When a Customer Becomes Too Important (via...
But how do you know if a customer has become too important to you? The federation offers these two crucial warning signs: ¶When one customer is responsible for 30 percent or more of your revenue. ¶If cash flow would be badly disrupted if one customer were to suddenly cancel all orders or even cut back sharply. “Expenses would continue, but suddenly there wouldn’t be enough to cover them.” ...

Roadside cameras recorded number plates before flashing their registration on to screens and revealing the grade of oil recommended for use in the car’s engine. Castrol used another firm to obtain the data, which is believed to have contained most of the 34million-strong driver details held by the DVLA. This identified the make, year, engine size and model of vehicle, enabling Castrol to...

Apple vs HP vs Dell on carbon accounting (via...
For the first time Apple has now divulged its carbon footprint: 10.2 million tons of carbon emissions annually. That’s significantly larger than competitors HP (8.4 million tons) and Dell (471,000 tons). But Apple’s figure takes into account the carbon emitted when consumers use its products, as well as the carbon emissions from product manufacturing. Apple’s competitors don’t often take into...
. . . it doesn't take as many associates to screw...
If nothing else, technology has streamlined much of what lawyers, especially young lawyers, used to do; clients have different expectations of outside legal counsel; and it turns out that it doesn’t take as many associates to screw in a light bulb as it used to. via legalwatercooler.blogspot.com heh heh. Cyclo - sprint-wheel carrier
via classiclightweights.co.uk Nice historical piece on bike racing in England in the 1940s and 1950s, including this race-wheel carrier. If Interbike has Cross Vegas, the North American Handmade Bike Show should feature this race. Riders commute to the race venue, swap wheels, race, swap back and ride home. CO2 capture at West Virginia Coal Plant -...
“There’s no evidence that burying carbon dioxide in the earth is a better strategy than aggressively pursuing other alternatives that clearly are better for the environment and will in the long run be less costly,” Mr. Holtz said. But power company officials say the effort is the energy industry’s best hope of stanching carbon dioxide emissions over the next few decades. “I really believe, in...
This is a big knot to untangle: Sustainability...
Milk is among the first products that Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is trying to measure as part of a broad effort by the retailer to assess the environmental impact of the products its sells. It intends to begin labeling certain products with a “sustainability” score — a single number that would take into account not only carbon emissions, but also water use and waste production. That...

Real Men Tax Gas
According to the energy economist Phil Verleger, a $1 tax on gasoline and diesel fuel would raise about $140 billion a year. If I had that money, I’d devote 45 cents of each dollar to pay down the deficit and satisfy the debt hawks, 45 cents to pay for new health care and 10 cents to cushion the burden of such a tax on the poor and on those who need to drive long distances. via nytimes.com...

France to count happiness in GDP By Ben Hall in Paris Published: September 14 2009 15:48 | Last updated: September 15 2009 08:52 Happiness, long holidays and a sense of well-being may not be everyone’s yardstick for economic performance, but Nicolas Sarkozy believes they should be embraced by the world in a national accounting overhaul. France’s president on Monday urged...

Now, I would argue that now is exactly the time where we need more volunteerism, not only because needs are greater, more people are hungry, more people are out of work, more people are falling through the cracks, but when I talk to young people, for example, I say to them now is the time to get experience — since you may not be able to find a job right away — get some experience doing some good...

“What Lego loses is what makes it so special,” he says. “When you have a less structured, less themed set, kids have the ability to start from scratch. When you have kids playing out Indiana Jones, they’re playing out Hollywood’s imagination, not their own.” Even toy analysts who admire the company and its recent success acknowledge a broad shift. “I would like to see more open-ended play like...
