Dear Mr. Microsoft- What the heck is .docx?

Someone just sent me a Word document in .docx format. Apparently Word 2007 has its own brand new format?

My Mac thought it was a compressed file and got stuck on it. Microsoft has kindly provided a converter utility for pre-2007 versions of Word http://tinyurl.com/2zpc5q, but only if they are on Windows. Argh.

Another incompatible format. Wonderful.
